Poetic Denim tells the story of denim through the lens of Black culture from oppression to expression, from survival to power. Denim carries a complicated history, during slavery and the years that followed, coarse denim and other durable fabrics were often associated with the labor and clothing of enslaved and working Black people.
Over time, Black communities transformed the meaning of denim that was once connected to labor became a canvas for identity, individuality, resistance, and self expression.
Through generations, denim became deeply woven into Black culture from workwear to streetwear, from music and entertainment to high fashion, Black creatives and designers have continuously reinvented denim in ways that demanded attention and celebrated who we are.
Poetic Denim explores that evolution of denim and art, each look represents a chapter from the weight of history to the freedom of self expression today. With hand painted flowers and other hand crafted details, the collection takes a fabric once used to define our labor and reimagines it as a symbol of creativity, confidence, resilience, and power.
